The Sea Gypsies of Malaya. First edition, first impression, with a pleasing provenance, of this anthropological study which argues that Mawken culture and pisci-agricultural knowledge should be preserved in the face of increasingly assimilative forces.White arranged for the foreword to be written by the Oxford don Robert Marrett, one of the leading lights of British anthropology during the field's formative period. This copy is from the library of Sir Evan Davies Jones (1859-1949), with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Jones was a civil engineer who worked on government hydro-engineering projects in Malaya, Gibraltar, Singapore, Egypt, and elsewhere. He served as MP for Pembrokeshire between 1918 and 1922 and as a life-governor of the National Library of Wales, to which he donated his extensive collection of Welsh bookplates and materials relating to Welsh history.
