Synopsis found online: "The Water World by Prof. J. W. Van Dervoort is an illustrated late-19th-century popular work about the ocean and marine life. It is not a novel; rather, it is a wide-ranging Victorian-era survey of the sea, combining natural history, science, maritime technology, exploration, and folklore. The work appeared in several editions/printings in the 1880s. Van Dervoort sets out to make the enormous and largely unfamiliar world of the oceans understandable to a general readership. The book begins with the physical ocean—its laws, tides, currents, waves, winds, storms, whirlpools, and other phenomena—and then moves into the living world beneath the surface." B62
