Arms and the Covenant. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his daughter on the front free endpaper, "Sarah from her father Winston S. Churchill June 1938".Arms and the Covenant collected speeches warning of the dangers of a re-armed Germany, the threat of Hitler and Mussolini, and the inevitable failure of a policy of appeasement. These warnings were unpopular and largely unheeded but soon proved to be remarkably prescient. The collection was also published later that year in America as While England Slept.Sarah (1914-1982) studied at dancing school, and took a career on stage and the screen - she starred in numerous movies in the 1940s and 1950s. "From adolescence, Sarah struggled between upholding the expectations that her position as a Churchill wrought and establishing her name and her career beyond the scope of her family. Though she could easily have lived in comfort in her father's aura until the end of her days, Sarah sought to be the sovereign of her own life, and in doing so became the most independently successful member of her family after Winston himself" (Katz, p. 22).Churchill was always close with Sarah. She accompanied him on several wartime conferences, including Tehran and Yalta, and their wartime letters show a deep respect and affection.
