An NYU and Harvard-alum, Countee Cullen was a significant voice of the Harlem Renaissance, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington throughout his career. His work spanned all forms: poetry, novels, children's writing, and eventually theatre.Cullen wrote his Christopher Cat books later in his life when he was teaching at Frederick Douglass Junior High School, where he eventually came to teach James Baldwin. Carl Van Vechten called My lives and How I Lost Them "a delicately humorous and enchanting performance". It has since been praised for the wit and intelligence with which Cullen presents the ephemerality of the world to a younger audience.
