Dickens considered Martin Chuzzlwit "a hundred points immeasurably the best of my stories", and his biographer as marking "a great change in Dickens's conception of moral characteristics... For the first time Dickens begins to explore the contradictions and difficulties of the contemporary human world" (Ackroyd, p. 392).Lars Kremers distinguishes between three binding states, depending on the cloth grain. This copy is in the second state fine ribbed-grain cloth, following the diagonal fine-ribbed grain cloth, and followed by morocco-grain cloth. The novel was serialized in monthly parts from January 1843 to July 1844 and published in book form upon completion. This copy contains a mixture of sheets from the book-form edition and sheets unstitched from the parts, with the stab-holes visible.
