This was Knox's first attempt at fiction, a social satire presented as the reminiscences of a noblewoman from the future.In Knox's imagined future there are moving street platforms, improved aircraft, dance halls with rotating floors, and many ridiculous schools of art and poetry. Unbridled capitalism reigns in Russia under the old title of communism, much of central Europe exists as the tourism-fuelled Mittel-Europa, and over the channel a fad for elaborately carved ivory false teeth conceals "wretched British dentition" (Bleiler). The memoirs end in 1972, on the eve of another Great War, though the combatants are unnamed.Knox was a catholic priest whose early work was primarily theological. While chaplain at the University of Oxford, he branched out into literature, wrote a number of well-regarded detective novels, and was a founder member of the Detection Club, whose ranks included Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Hugh Walpole.
