Virginibus Puerisque and Other Papers. First edition of the author's first book of essays, collecting material published between 1874 and 1881. This is the first appearance in print of "Some Portraits by Raeburn" and of the second part of "Virginibus Puerisque".Stevenson modelled the style of his essays on the works of William Hazlitt and Charles Lamb. Although the book did not sell well at the time of publication, it received a good critical reception and helped to establish Stevenson's reputation.This copy is a second issue, with the binding lettered "Kegan Paul, Trench, & Co." at the foot of the spine, and ads dated "8.80".
