Rokovyye yaytsa (The Fatal Eggs). The copy of Michael Glenny, renowned Bulgakov translator, with his ownership inscription on the front free endpaper and many annotations throughout. Most of these notes offer translations of select words and phrases from the Russian into English. Glenny, "the most outstanding Russian translator of his generation" (The Times) was best known for his translation of The Master and Margarita, although he never published a translation of The Fatal Eggs. This speculative novel is set in a near-future Soviet Republic, concerning a zoologist and his haphazard experiments "Bulgakov's extensive knowledge of the Moscow newspaper world was obviously useful and there are many inside jokes, distortions of well-known names and parodies of the jargon of the new era" (Proffer).This novella first appeared in the review Nedra six months before it appeared in the collection Diavoliada. This is the second separate edition in Russian, as designated by Proffer.
