Faust: A Drama. And Schiller's Song of the Bell. First edition of the earliest substantial English translation. Here Gower translates Part I, the more famous half of the drama, which was the only part published in Goethe's lifetime. The first English translation of Goethe's Faust appeared in 1821, but it was only a fragment, less than a third as long as Gower's translation.This volume also contains Gower's translations of the only surviving fragment of the play Faust by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781), and "Das Lied von der Glocke" (The Song of the Bell) by Friedrich Schiller, which was first published in 1798. Francis Leverson-Gower (1800-1857), later Egerton, first Earl of Ellesmere, was a conservative politician and MP. This work began his successful literary career, which included translations of poetry, plays, essays and histories from German and French, and compositions of his own.
