Shackleton's Last Voyage. First edition. Wild "joined Shackleton on his final voyage to the Antarctic in 1921-1922, but the explorer's death sapped Wild's desire to continue" (Howgego). The expedition is often described as the final episode in the heroic age of Antarctic exploration.The author (1873-1939) took over command upon Shackleton's death and completed the journey to Elephant Island and along the Antarctic coast, combating unfavourable weather en route. The expedition returned to Plymouth harbour on 16 September, one year after its initial departure. Wild published this account shortly after; it reproduces some of the last photographs of Shackleton. Previously, he had served under Scott on the Discovery and Shackleton on both the Nimrod and Trans-Antarctic expeditions.
