The Last Crusade. First edition, first impression, of this narrative of the author's service with Naval Intelligence in Palestine, during which he was tasked with painting naval landscapes for permanent preservation in the Imperial War Museum. Maxwell arrived in the region shortly after the end of the First World War, and he found himself in an "opportunistic scramble" to find subjects. "The fact that I had very little time to think, but simply drew everything I cam across was my salvation, for I thus obtained glimpses of things and places from every point of view without rhyme or reason, and in sorting them out afterwards find that I am much better off than I seemed to be at the time" (preface).
