Sections devoted to moko and mokomakai describe the history and sociocultural intricacies of these practices.Major-General Horatio Gordon Robley (1840-1930) served in New Zealand in the early 1860s, as part of a force sent to suppress Maori in the region of the Bay of Plenty. Robley married a Maori woman and spent long periods living in indigenous communities.
