In this lengthy study, illustrated with the author's sketches and photographs of material from his collections, sections explore the history and sociocultural intricacies of moko and mokomakai practices.Major-General Robley (1840-1930) served in New Zealand in the early 1860s, as part of a force sent to suppress Maori in the region of the Bay of Plenty. Robley married a Maori woman and spent long periods living in indigenous communities. The recipient (1846-1923) was a barrister and antiquarian.
