Blue cloth boards remain clean and sound with only light shelf wear. Interior is clean and firmly bound. Dust jacket shows considerably more wear, with rubbing, creasing, edge tears, small chips and loss, particularly around the spine ends and corners. Signed and inscribed by Louella Dirksen, Everett Dirksen’s widow, “Best wishes, Louella Dirksen, August 1972.” Of particular interest, the front endpaper also bears a presentation inscription from Thomas R. Dirksen identifying himself as the twin brother of the late Senator Everett Dirksen. A contemporary newspaper obituary for Thomas Dirksen is laid/tipped inside, along with an earlier library bookplate and additional ownership inscription. Stated first edition of this 297-page memoir, illustrated with black-and-white photographs and bound in blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. Louella Dirksen recounts approximately 45 years with her husband, mixing intimate family memories with an eyewitness view of a political career spanning six presidential administrations. This copy has substantially stronger association interest than the typical signed example because it carries inscriptions from both Everett Dirksen’s widow and his twin brother, Thomas Reed Dirksen.
