Educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford, he combined official service with extensive travel, publishing popular accounts drawn from direct personal experience.Murray's first encounter with the Pawnee is described in Chapter XIII of the first volume. The work offers close observation of Pawnee social customs, hunting practices, and diplomacy, providing a contemporary perspective from the years immediately preceding intensified territorial pressure in the region.
