Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
Smärre afhandlingar i allmänna hushållningen. First edition in Swedish of Hume's Political Discourses (1752), translated by Peter Jacob Hjelm (1746-1813), a chemist who was the first to isolate the element molybdenum. Rare: WorldCat locates only five copies, at McGill, Harvard, National Library of Scotland, the National Library of Sweden, and Universitätsbibliothek Greifswald. The translation was made from the text of the Political Discourses as printed in the 1772 edition of Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects. Hjelm's translation contains eight of the original twelve discourses plus 'Of the jealousy of trade', which had first appeared in the 1760 edition of the Essays. Two of the Discourses, 'Of commerce' and 'Of luxury', had been published in Swedish in 1767 (Herr David Humes Politiske afhandlingar om handel och yppighet), but were translated from French. These two translations are Hume's only appearances in Swedish in the eighteenth century.
