First edition of the prison director's critical history of penitentiaries, relatively well-represented institutionally but scarce in commerce.Marquet-Vasselot was appointed director of the maison centrale in Loos in 1829, which by 1832 housed approximately 1,400 inmates. He successfully worked to impose order on the previously chaotic establishment, improving food quality, sanitation, and medical services, as well as encouraging employment within the prison's workshops. He also gave lectures on the morality of French penal laws each Sunday.
