First edition of the third part of Vico's De universi juris uno principio et fine uno (1720), one of his principal writings on jurisprudence and Roman law, in which he asserts his conception of the development of law as governed by a single, universal principle of reason and authority.Professor of rhetoric at the university of Naples from 1699, Vico's failure to succeed to the chair of Civil Law at Naples when it fell vacant in 1723 bitterly disappointed him, but he continued to pursue his highly original enquiries into the fields of jurisprudence, linguistic scholarship, and history. Though many of his ideas were neglected during his lifetime (1668-1744) and for many years afterwards, the Scienza Nuova (1725), his most famous publication, laid the foundations for some of the most important developments in many branches of knowledge - especially the philosophies of law, history, and language - over the following two centuries.
