This is a 2003 reissue by the Arizona Historical Society of its original 1949 edition of the journal of John Van Deusen DuBois,a West Point graduate who served in the Army Mounted Rifle Regiment in the upper Rio Grande Valley of Texas and New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona in the years immediately preceding the Civil War. His journal provides detailed and evocative descriptions of army life, encournters with Native Americans, topography, early settlers in the region, etc. The text is supplemented with numerous pencil sketches by Joseph Heger, an artist who depicted the landscapes in New Mexico that Du Bois encountered in his army service. This edition includes an introductory description of how the original volume came to be published. This 2003 edition was limited to only 300 copies, and in addition to the journal and sketches includes the text of several letters that Du Bois wrote to family and friends during his service.
