In Our First Year of War. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the 28th President on the front free endpaper, "Mr Charles W. Dunn, With the compliments of Woodrow Wilson. 13 March, 1918". The recipient Charles Wesley Dunn (1885-1959) studied at Princeton where "his favorite professor was Woodrow Wilson, who had a great influence on his intellectual development" (Janssen, p. 446). Dunn became a leading specialist in food and drug law, "the most prominent attorney in his field in the United States, if not the world" (Janssen, p. 452). He published Dunn's Pure Food and Drug Legal Manual in 1912. The book collects Wilson's wartime speeches, including his "Fourteen Points" speech of 8 January 1918, which set out his programme for a negotiated peace, shaped the Treaty of Versailles, and laid the groundwork for the League of Nations. All royalties went to the Red Cross.
