First edition. Rockhill was an American scholar-diplomat who won acclaim for himself with his travels in Mongolia and Tibet. The present book is his account of his first expedition of 1888-9, when he left Beijiing to explore Tibet. Rockhill crossed China to Koko-Nor and continued south-west hoping to reach Lhasa, but in fact diverted south east to Drechu and Tatsien-lu.
