A classic of Sinology, first published in 1867 , one of the best reference work available to European scholars. The British missionary Alexander Wylie (1815-1887) spent half of his life in China, and published a number of important works on Chinese philology. After his return to England in 1877 Oxford purchased his substantial library in 1882, doubling the size of their Chinese holdings and transforming them into a working research collection.
