Original blue cloth lettered in silver to spine, in the dustwrapper designed by Gross-André, priced 11/6 net to front flap; pp. [6], 182, [4 (advertisements)]; fading to cloth and pushing to spine tips, a few light white marks to lower edge of front panel, wrapper variously rubbed, nicked and torn, with loss to spine tips and corners, low quality paper evenly toned, capital B handwritten in ink to upper edge of front free endpaper; a very good copy in a good, vibrantly coloured wrapper. First edition, first printing. The last of the three Hamilton novels (though a free-standing story) to feature the heartless swindler Ernest Ralph Gorse, a character thought to be based on the real-life murderer Neville Heath, hanged in 1946.
