Original black cloth, lettered in gilt to spine, in dust-jacket priced $5.00; pp. xx, [2], 11-431, [1]; spine ends lightly bumped, jacket slightly soiled and sunned, with wear to spine ends and a crease to the lower corner of the rear panel; internally clean; a near-fine copy in a very good jacket. First edition, first issue of this collection of fantasy, horror and science fiction short stories by H. P. Lovecraft. The Dunwich Horror and Others was compiled by August Derleth, who played a central role in bringing Lovecraft’s work into book form after his death. The volume includes some of his most celebrated tales, among them ‘The Call of Cthulhu’, first published in Weird Tales (1928), which introduced the now-iconic figure of Cthulhu – a cosmic entity emblematic of the vast, indifferent forces that pervade Lovecraft’s fiction. Lovecraft’s writing is deeply informed by what has come to be termed ‘cosmicism’, a philosophical outlook emphasising humanity’s insignificance within an incomprehensible universe. Themes of civilisational fragility and existential dread recur throughout his work. Lovecraft’s imaginative vision and mythos have exerted a lasting influence on later writers and continue to shape modern horror and speculative fiction. SKU: 2121094
