ITEM DESCRIPTION This is a 2016 (Heisei 28) Japanese softcover book titled "Soshou" (相承), subtitled "The Teachings and Treasures Handed Down by Our Predecessors, Now Watched Over for Future Generations." The book was produced in connection with Akagisan Saifuku-ji, a Soto Zen temple in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, celebrated for the wood carvings of the late-Edo master craftsman Ishikawa Uncho. The obi (paper wrap-around band) is included and reads "Ishikawa Uncho, master craftsman of the closing years of the Edo period, is here" along with a note on the roughly 230-year history woven into the temple's lineage. Condition: Used. The seller notes light wear to the bottom edge of the cover and to the bottom edge of the obi band, but no tears or writing inside, with the main text fully readable throughout. Ishikawa Uncho (1814-1883) was a wood carver active in the final years of the Edo period into the early Meiji era, often called "the Michelangelo of Japan." Invited to Echigo (present-day Niigata) to work on Saifuku-ji's Kaisando hall, he produced there what is considered his masterpiece: an elaborately carved ceiling panel depicting Zen Master Dogen subduing a fierce tiger.
