It Takes All Kinds Louis Bromfield 1939 1st Edition SIGNED Malabar Farm DJ
$150 · Offered by eBay
First edition · Signed
1939 first edition of It Takes All Kinds by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield, with an especially interesting signed Malabar Farm presentation piece tipped onto the front endpaper. Published by Harper & Brothers, New York and London. The copyright page explicitly states FIRST EDITION with Harper's H-O code. The book retains its original illustrated $3.00 dust jacket. The tipped-in handwritten piece is headed “Malabar Farm 1939” and reads: “For Fanny Butcher with the best of everything from Louis Bromfield” The signature is consistent with Bromfield's known signature. The Fanny Butcher inscription is potentially significant rather than just a random owner's name. Butcher was a prominent Chicago literary critic and longtime book editor/critic for the Chicago Tribune. Given Bromfield's literary circle and the Malabar Farm notation, this makes for an unusually interesting association/presentation copy. The book contains nine works, including McLeod's Folly, The Hand of God, New York Legend, The Girl Who Knew Everybody, Bitter Lotus, Good Time Bessie, That Which Never Returns, Better Than Life, and Aunt Flora. Malabar Farm's own bibliography confirms the collection's 1939 publication. Condition: Hardcover is in vintage used condition with age toning and previous ownership/presentation markings. Original dust jacket is quite worn with substantial edge wear, chips, tears, creasing and losses, but remains substantially intact and retains the original $3.00 price. Jacket h
