From Artsynet: "Pioneering post-war artist Karl Gerstner is most famous for his unorthodox approach to graphic design and typography, although he was also a celebrated painter. After studying design at Allgemeine Gewerbeschule Basel, Gerstner co-founded the GGK agency in 1963. The renowned Swiss advertising firm created high-profile promotional campaigns and corporate identities for clients such as Swissair, Citroën, Burda, and IBM. A hallmark of Gerstner’s commercial work is his use of “Integral Typography,” foregrounding bold and provocative text, an approach regularly seen in advertisements today. Gerstner’s widely influential 1964 book of essays, Designing Programmes, relayed his methodologies around his signature flexible grid, computational systems, and typography. His paintings were also inspired by the logic of mathematics and computer programming. One of his earliest series, “Aperspektiven,” features gray-toned pictures with shapes produced according to specific coordinates.
