Soldier by Anthony B. Herbert, Lt. Col., Ret., with James T. Wooten — 1973 Hardcover with Dust Jacket — Inscribed James T. Wooten Family Association Copy with Period Provenance Published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston in 1973, this copy is the stated Second Printing, February 1973, issued just one month after the January publication. Soldier is Lt. Col. Anthony B. Herbert's controversial account of his extraordinary military career, including service in Korea and Vietnam and the events surrounding his highly publicized allegations of atrocities and subsequent conflict with the U.S. Army. Journalist James T. Wooten, then a national correspondent for The New York Times, collaborated with Herbert on the book. What makes this particular copy exceptional is its personal association with co-author James T. Wooten. The front endpaper bears a warm handwritten inscription dated 3-29-79: “For Uncle Clyde & Aunt Sarah With great love and deep respect and fond memories of all the good days they gave me. Jim” Preserved inside this same copy are several period newspaper clippings concerning James T. Wooten and his career. Most significantly, a clipping dated 3-26-74, headlined “Author Visits Aunts Here,” identifies James T. Wooten by name as co-author of Soldier and reports that he spent the weekend with his aunt, Mrs. Clyde Dockey, along with another aunt.
