Cnapan (alternative spellings criapan, knapan or knappan) is a Welsh form of Celtic medieval football. The game originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Cnapan was one of the traditional ball games played to celebrate Shrovetide and Eastertide in the British Isles. The game was widely played in Tudor England and may have played a role in developing modern rugby. Cnapan teams were huge, sometimes containing as many as a thousand players! Above all, Cnapan was a handling and passing ball game with elusive running and hard tackling both greatly admired. Reading copy only. Foxed exterior covers with some soiling.
