The Making of the President 1972 by Theodore H. White — SIGNED, Inscribed to Paul Hoffman and Anna Rosenberg Up for sale is a first edition of The Making of the President 1972: A Narrative History of American Politics in Action by Theodore H. White (Atheneum Publishers, 1973), the fourth and final volume in White's landmark campaign-history series that won him the Pulitzer Prize for its inaugural 1960 installment. Signed and warmly inscribed by the author. The inscription reads: "To Anna and Paul. With love, Teddy White." A remarkable association copy. This copy is inscribed to Paul G. Hoffman — president of the Studebaker Corporation and first Administrator of the Economic Cooperation Administration (ECA), the agency that ran the Marshall Plan — and his wife, Anna M. Rosenberg, a formidable public figure in her own right. Rosenberg served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Personnel under President Truman (the highest-ranking woman in the Pentagon's history to that point), advised four U.S. presidents on labor and public policy, and was a trusted confidante across both government and industry throughout the mid-20th century. Together, the Hoffmans were among the most influential figures in postwar American public life, making this a genuinely significant piece of Cold War-era political history.
