Freedom and After by Tom Mboya — SIGNED, Inscribed to Paul G. Hoffman, First Administrator of the UNDP Up for sale is a first edition of Freedom and After by Tom Mboya (André Deutsch, London, 1963), the political memoir of one of the founding fathers of independent Kenya. Signed and inscribed by the author. The inscription reads: "To Paul Hoffman, with my best wishes, T.J. Mboya, 25/3/66." A historically significant, well-timed association copy. Tom Mboya (1930–1969) was a Kenyan trade unionist, Pan-Africanist, and statesman — one of the founding fathers of the Republic of Kenya and the first Secretary-General of the Kenya African National Union. He is also remembered for the "Kennedy Airlifts," the scholarship program that brought young East Africans, including Barack Obama Sr., to study in the United States. Mboya was assassinated in 1969 at age 38. This copy is inscribed in March 1966 to Paul G. Hoffman — who had just been appointed, weeks earlier, as the first Administrator of the newly established United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN's chief vehicle for funding and coordinating development across newly independent nations, including Kenya. Hoffman previously served as president of the Studebaker Corporation and as the first Administrator of the Economic Cooperation Administration (ECA), overseeing the Marshall Plan.
