Kyoto. First edition of this rare and attractive portfolio distributed by Kyoto's city government and not sold commercially. We have located only four copies on WorldCat.The photographer, Hori Masumi (1826-1880), was part of the first generation of professional Japanese photographers. His studio opened in Kyoto in 1866 and remained in the family until 1942. His 30 photogravures capture the city's famous sites and vistas, including the imperial palace, temples, and cherry trees.Copies are held by Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and the University of Hawaii.
