The Splendours of Historic Nanking. First edition, first printing, of this photographic record of the capital of the Republic of China and its environs. K. W. Kwok (1896-1976, also known as Guo Xiqi) chose to photograph natural landscapes and traditional architecture, as well as more recent structures such as the Sun Yat-Sen Mausoleum.In 1927, Chiang Kai-Shek established his capital at Nanjing and ruled there for a decade, until the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese War. For Kwok, travel around the city sated his desire "for strange stories and picturesque scenes and a knowledge of the beauty of the Earth" (preface).
