An Autobiography, and Evidence 1944-1994. First edition, limited issue for Whitney Fellows, no. 55 of 250 copies signed and numbered by the photographer on the inside lid, with 2 engraver's proof photographs, one of Jean Shrimpton (Paris 1970) and one of Jasper Johns (New York City 1965), loosely inserted in paper folders as issued. This set includes An Autobiography and Evidence 1944-1995, the latter of which was published to mark his exhibition of the same name at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1994. Evidence contains two essays: curator Jane Livingston discusses Avedon's career and Adam Gopnik discusses Avedon as an individual. Avedon's photographic autobiography ranges from his earliest private pictures to the snapshots of stars that made his name. His "fashion and portrait photographs helped define America's image of style, beauty, and culture for the last half-century" (New York Times obituary). It has been reported that only about 100 copies of this edition was published.
