Framework Houses Second edition, collector's issue, number 77 of 100 copies with an original silver gelatin print. Framework Houses was first published simultaneously in English and German by Schirmer/Mosel in 1977. There was also a trade issue. The Bechers's austere black-and-white photographs of "typologies", which demonstrate variant examples of a single type of industrial structure, have been hugely influential, and offer important documents of landscapes and lives now lost. "They are the lines on the face of the world. The photographs are portraits of our history. And when the structures have been demolished and grassed over, as though they were never there, the pictures remain" (Tate). The couple began taking photographs of the framework houses of Siegan's industrial region in 1958, early in their career. The subsequent work is a taxonomy of those residences, offering an elegiac record of one of the oldest iron-producing regions of Europe.
