First edition, first printing, this copy with a fine provenance, inscribed by the photographer on the half-title, "Para Augusta e Arnold, estas imagens e estas lagrimas do meu pova bem amado. Com todo carinho, S. Salgado" ("To Augusta and Arnold, these images and these tears of my beloved people. With all affection, S. Salgado"). This title is rare inscribed.The recipients were the photographer Arnold Newman and his wife Augusta, who set up a foundation in 2007 to further Arnold's legacy and support photographers. He is widely known for pioneering the "environmental portrait", where the subject is portrayed at home. Salgado is famed for his compassionate photojournalism. An Uncertain Grace is one of the most important visual records of life in the 20th century, documenting Salgado's journey through communities in the Andes, Brazil, Ethiopia, Chad, and Mali.
