THE ROYAL SOCIETY – SIR WILLIAM HUGGINS – FIRST EDITION 1906 An original 1906 first edition of The Royal Society; or, Science in the State and in the Schools by Sir William Huggins, K.C.B., O.M., F.R.S., published in London by Methuen & Co. The publication page states “First Published in 1906”. Huggins was a distinguished British scientist and former President of the Royal Society, and the book brings together material from four of his Presidential Addresses, covering the Royal Society, its relationship with other scientific societies and the State, and the place of science in education. The title page states “With Twenty-Five Illustrations”. The volume includes historical portraits, engravings, buildings and other illustrations, including the impressive frontispiece reproduced from an engraving by Wenceslaus Hollar. Original red cloth hardback binding with gilt title and author to the front board, gilt border and Royal Society arms, with gilt lettering to the spine. This is also an interesting former Dundee Free Libraries – Central Lending Department copy, retaining the original large pink lending label inside the front board, repeated Dundee library stamps and the old classification number 3135 A, which also appears on the spine and title page. Condition: clearly a well-used antique library copy. The red cloth boards have substantial staining, spotting, marking and general wear.
