Geological Maps, Columns and Sections of the High Zagros of South-West Iran, A substantial and detailed geological survey published by the British Petroleum Company, formerly the Anglo-Persian and Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. It is based on explorations undertaken by British and Iranian field geologists - likely including the renowned Norman Falcon - between 1928 and 1939, a period of intensive oil exploration and protracted negotiations between Britain and Iran over oil concessions.Produced to mark the 22nd International Geological Congress in Delhi - the first to be held in Asia - the report focuses on the Zagros Mountains of south-west Iran, home to the country's principal oil fields and to Masjed-e Soleyman, the first commercial oil field discovered in the Middle East.The 16 meticulously prepared maps, illustrating the region's lithostratigraphy, also mark oil wells, pipelines, and production facilities. They extend from Qasr-e Shirin, with the important Naft-e Shah oil field, southwards through Kermanshah, Dezful, Isfahan, Deh Bid, Shiraz, Furk, Amirabad, Bandar Abbas, and the Strait of Hormuz. Much of the fieldwork had to be undertaken using pack animals because of the lack of motor roads and other forms of mechanized transport.
