Photo album of a British officer stationed in Egypt. A substantial album of photographs of Egypt's principal cities and British military personnel, taken by Major (later Lieutenant-General Sir) John Guise Cowley (1905–1993). It includes 10 apparently unpublished photographs of the First Cairo Conference of 1943, several featuring Winston Churchill, Chiang Kai-shek, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.A gifted photographer, Cowley served with the 2nd Battalion of the Dorsetshire Regiment, deployed in Egypt in 1941, Palestine in 1942, and the Western Desert in 1944. Stationed again in Egypt after El Alamein, he attended the First Cairo Conference as a brigadier at Allied Force Headquarters. The conference was convened to discuss Allied strategy against Japan. Cowley took close-up photographs of Churchill, Roosevelt, Chiang Kai-shek, and various members of their parties, including a portrait of Soong Mei-ling (Madame Chiang), and group photographs featuring Clementine Churchill, Lord Louis Mountbatten, Lord and Lady Killearn, Egyptian prime minister Mostafa el-Nahas Pasha, and Sir John Dill.Cowley's tourist photographs of Cairo portray many of the city's principal monuments and cultural sites, including the Blue Mosque, the Royal Opera House, Abdin Palace, the zoo, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and the Giza Zoological Gardens.
