PL/1 with Applications: A Short Course Offered for the Personnel of the Arabian American Oil Company, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, February 16-28, 1974. Rare, unrecorded among institutional libraries. Aramco drove the development of early computing in Saudi Arabia, first supporting administration, then operations. PL/1 (Programming Language One) was initially developed by IBM in 1964. In the 1940s, Aramco began its push towards computerization with tabulating machines that generated accounting data from punched cards. In the early 1950s, it acquired its first mainframes. Around 1972, it introduced the IBM 370/158 mainframe, which offered early virtual storage for running larger programmes, and in 1979 King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals became the first Saudi university to establish a Department of Computer Science.The course was intended for Aramco's Engineering Department and introduced 40 engineers to PL/I, computer capabilities and limitations, data requirements, and data entry. It was designed and taught by David Donohue and F. J. "Bud" Hilliard. Donohue, president of Intercomp/Human Resources Development Corporation, specialized in engineering mathematics for computing and had taught petroleum engineering at Penn State. Hilliard, president of Opcode, specialized in applied mathematics and developed computer languages for oil companies.
