Photo album: "Peep into Arabia". A collection of privately taken scenic photographs, probably the work of a British soldier or doctor stationed in Aden. In 1937, Aden Colony would become a protectorate of the British crown, having thus far been governed as part of British India. In the initial images, a caravan of a dozen camels, with which the photographer was travelling, is shown resting in a small town with a suq. The following photographs focus on everyday life in the streets, the Marina Hotel - among the oldest in Aden - and the dockyards. There are also several perceptive and accomplished portraits of a man with a dagger, another carrying fruit, another making clay vases, smiling children, and the local army with bagpipes. Distinctive are the images of Aden Salt Works with its windmills in the background, and the stone water tanks of Tawila, dating to pre-Islamic times and restored by the British in the 19th century.
