Al-maqala al-'ula l-tahrir Uqlidis ("The First Article, with Commentary"). An attractive illustrated lithographed edition of al-Tusi's Arabic commentary on Book I of Euclid's Elements. Based on al-Tusi's own definitive Arabic translation of Euclid, this edition was produced at the Alawi Press, one of the earliest and most prolific printing presses in Lucknow, India. We have traced only one institutional copy, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.The Persian polymath Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (1201–74), one of the foremost scientists of the medieval Islamic world, made major contributions to logic, astronomy, and mathematics. His highly influential translation of Euclid became the standard text used in madrasas throughout the Islamicate world and was still being used for teaching by Muslim scholars in 19th-century India. Here, Book I is printed with a commentary by the 17th-century Indian mathematician Muhammad Barakat (Schubring, p. 41)."This commentary was included in the proposed curricular reform of Nizam al-Din al-Sihlawi that came to be known as the Dars-i-Nizam-i and was associated primarily with the Farangi Mahal educational reform movement in Lucknow. These curricular reforms apparently produced sufficient demand for the commentary so that it was printed at least twice... in the 19th century. The commentary is followed by the appendix that Qutb al-Din al-Shirazi had inserted into his Persian version of the Tahrir of al-Tusi - the composite diagram incorporating all the diagrams
