Zhdanov served as a senior officer of the Rear Headquarters and Chief of Rear Communications of the Soviet 40th Army (OKSVA — Limited Contingent of Soviet Forces in Afghanistan) in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Unlike a general historical study of the Soviet-Afghan War, the book presents events through the direct experience of a staff officer involved in the everyday functioning, communications, organization, and support of Soviet forces in Afghanistan. The author deliberately adopts a restrained, report-like manner of narration. He describes what he personally witnessed, the circumstances of military service, the work of officers and soldiers, dangerous situations, and the realities encountered by Soviet personnel during his deployment. The book is particularly valuable as an eyewitness memoir and primary source concerning the Soviet military presence in Afghanistan during the first half of the 1980s. The perspective is that of a participant and naturally reflects the author's personal experiences, attitudes, and interpretation of the conflict.
