Good-Bye to all That.
£750 · Offered by Shapero Rare Books
Second state, with the infamous Sassoon poem excised and replaced with asterisks. Graves published the original without the author's permission, much to Sassoon's dismay. Sassoon took umbrage at much of the content of the first edition of Good-Bye to All That, and alongside fellow poet Edmund Blunden wrote extensive marginal notes in Blunden's copy contradicting Robert Graves' original text; that annotated copy now resides in the New York Public Library. First edition, first impression, second state with offending passages replaced with asterisks; 8vo (20 x 14 cm); photographic frontispiece portrait, 7 plates and maps including one double-page, errata slip tipped in at p.399, light offsetting to endpapers, sporadic light spotting, otherwise very good condition; finely bound by Bayntun Riviere, modern half red morocco over red cloth boards, spine in 6 compartments with lettering and floral emblems in gilt, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles, cockerel endpapers, light signs of wear to extremities, a few minor blemishes to spine, otherwise very good condition; 448pp. Higginson Williams A32a
