She begins in the early days of the 1920s when Soviet vacationing focused on spas and a rather medical approach to leisure. Work in Soviet ideology was regarded as the highest calling of humans and the key to producing "the new socialist man" but it also acknowledged the need for rest and recuperation. One's vacations were viewed as a way of making a better, more productive worker. Also discussed is the fundamental conflict between authoritarianism and the individualism implied in personal tourism. In the 1980s with the advent of perestroika (restructuring), the Soviet economy, including its view of tourism and vacations, ultimately shifted to a more consumerist and individualistic basis. This book is well illustrated with numerous b&w historical photos of Soviet vacationers, spas and resorts. There is also an index of some of the Russian abbreviations used in th towards the front.
