The Universe in a Nutshell. Later edition, the title page with Hawking's thumbprint and his greeting, "To boldly go where Star Trek fears to tread... Stephen Hawking. 25 February 2005", the latter inscribed on his behalf by an assistant.Three accompanying typed letters signed from Hawking's personal assistant (Judith Croadsell) show that, at the request of one of its pupils, Hawking donated this copy to a Sheffield school as a prize for a charity auction. The copy was won by the pupil's father and passed to them. A photocopy of a thank-you letter from the pupil to Hawking is also included.Hawking intended The Universe in a Nutshell to be a more accessible introduction to his thinking than A Brief History of Time. "I want to share my excitement at the discoveries that are being made and the picture of reality that is emerging" (foreword). This copy is a fifth impression.
