The Life of John Marshall. First edition, inscribed by the author on an initial binder's blank, "In sound principle & straight-out Americanism, there is no truer guide than John Marshall. Faithfully Albert J. Beveridge, written for my young friend Richard M. Carlisle, South Bend, Indiana, February 12, 1923".Beveridge's biography of John Marshall, the fourth and most formative Chief Justice of the United States, was "widely acclaimed and won a Pulitzer Prize" (Encyclopaedia Britannica). "The writing was vivid and vibrant. Because of Beveridge's prodigious research, the volumes have remained the standard biography" (ANB).The recipient Richard Marvin Carlisle (1905-1972) later graduated from Yale in 1929, served in the South Pacific during the Second World War, and became secretary-treasurer of the Carlisle Investment Company. His father, Charles Arthur Carlisle, was active in Republican politics in Indiana, where Beveridge served as senator from 1899 to 1911. On the day of the inscription, Beveridge addressed a Bible class in South Bend before speaking in nearby Elkhart to a crowd of 400 at an event marking Abraham Lincoln's birthday (see The Star Press, 13 February 1923).
