Autograph note signed, together with manuscript page. A single leaf from the manuscript of Meade's December 1977 Nobel Prize lecture, together with a March 1978 note from Meade presenting it to one "Mr Mertens". James Meade (1907-1995) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on the theory of international trade, sharing the award with the Swedish economist Bertil Ohlin. For his commemorative lecture, he discussed the meaning of internal balance. This leaf, containing the eighth page of text, covers the fluctuations of the money-wage rate and includes Meade's acknowledgement that if he were writing his seminal work The Balance of Payments (1951) in 1977, he would not have framed the analysis in terms of external and internal balances.
