(1961) : Plot: Morley investigates a series of murders and a high-stakes blackmail scheme involving a bathhouse run by a sinister operator named Joe Cannelli, aided by a straight former football player sidekick named Tiger Olsen. On line research finds this pulp fiction classic was considered the first gay novel in a detective story framework. Written by Lou Rand, the pseudonym of San Francisco writer and chef Lou Rand Hogan, (author of The Gay Cookbook), and later reprinted as Rough Trade: The Strangest Relationship Two Men Ever Shared! the final six pages reproducing text from a 1959 Supreme Court obscenity decision, including the argument that obscenity must be judged according to “contemporary community standards”. The story also presents as granted the gay social lifestyle without rebuff or alarm. The cover shows the two main characters aiding a young half naked woman in a towel, supposedly a high status socialite.
