Autograph letter signed, to Zachary Macaulay. A short, seemingly unpublished letter from the prominent political economist and colonial administrator, capturing his efforts to build support for the first Western efforts to colonize New Zealand. The New Zealand Company was formed in 1825 with the intention of establishing a new English society in the Antipodes. Torrens was appointed one of the company's first directors, and this letter, sent alongside a copy of the company's prospectus, reflects his attempt to build an alliance with the Church Missionary Society.His recipient is Zachary Macaulay (1768-1838), a statistician and a prominent member of the CMS: the two presumably met by at least 1821, when Macaulay joined Torrens's Political Economy Club.
